Note that the writer states that the cat stopped chewing after bup was administered. The owner reports that there was no proof of any damage or abnormalities in the jaw or teeth. Giving bup is not a good basis to assume that the teeth were causing pain. I am so sorry, but this seems incredibly cruel. It's like fabric is her crack and she can't beat the habit. It really seems like there's something in the fabric that she's addicted to and I don't know how to deter it. Just the room, plastic toys, a litter box, and cardboard boxes as beds. No more cat beds, no hanging jackets to jump into and eat, no rugs for her to consume over 1ft of the edging of. We put her in a mostly empty room with only plastic cat toys with her brother. That developed into her refining her sense of smell around any fabric. Such as a glove that fell down the back of the couch, our jackets on the back of the door, clean balled up socks that were definitely in a drawer. Then we noticed that she was finding fabric in places we didn't know there was fabric. The next day, she had consumed a few inches of the soft material but vomited it all out.Ī week later, she vomits up an entire toy, a fabric monster cat toy that had soft fuzz on his back. About a month later, she started grabbing the blanket in her mouth and growling. Teebs would suckle and make biscuits on that blanket, which we assumed was normal because it wasn't very long after they were weaned. We put momma's blanket in a storage bin and the kittens usually slept there during the day. The other two ended up bonding strongly to my older boycat and we kept them. We found momma and two of the kittens a home. Also spite shitting everywhere even with her own space and so on. They were still weaning and she began attacking them, then be uncomfortable because she wasn't nursing so her nipples hurt. Her momma was a stray that I kept until she developed behavioral problems when the kittens were 3 mos old. She does it mostly when she's getting comfortable and about to sleep.įor some history, the Pica started when she was about 3.5-4 months old. The Pica is definitely not hunger related, as she will still chew on fabric after a meal she's satisfied with. She's also incredibly strong for how small she is. I will say this, she's got the best sense of smell I've ever seen in a cat. I will ask about Zylkene but if it's an expensive medication, I cannot afford to buy it and her refusing and wasting it. Hey, I was a vet tech for years before my disability took over! They said she may grow out of it, but she's over a year old now and her fabric eating compulsions still take her over. We resorted to gluing the damn fabric down to reduce the risk. yet if she finds a seam anywhere on it, she'll still chews. I had to take all of the fabric off our cat tree and replace it with upholstery fabric. We had to move most of our furniture into other rooms. I mean I literally soaked an entire chair, using half the bottle in the process, and she certainly hates the taste but The Desire™ consumes her. We tried Ole Reliable: Bitter Apple spray. We've tried replacing fabric types, but very few go unchewed. Her brain tells her that she must eat fabric. However, she's cost us a lot in vet bills. I have a beautiful black cat who's the most amazing and well behaved cat ever. Does anyone have any recommendations for sprays or advice on how to help her? The vet can only recommend fluoxetine and she's impossible to pill. TLDR My cat has pica(diagnosed by a vet) and has compulsions to eat fabric.
